Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

Supervised exercise and lifestyle program for phases 3 and 4 of your treatment

Phases of Cardiac Rehabilitation

There are four phases of cardiac rehabilitation. The first phase occurs in the hospital after the cardiac event has happened. The other three phases occur in a cardiac rehabilitation centre or at your home, once you have left the hospital (if applicable).

1

This phase occurs soon after the cardiac event. Phase One is typically done in the hospital with a physiotherapist.

2

This is an out-patient phase that lasts 3-6 weeks. Phase Two usually occurs at an outpatient facility with a healthcare/exercise professional continuously monitoring your heart rate. The goal of this phase is to see how your body (especially your heart) is reacting to exercise.

3

This is a phase of outpatient therapy that is more intense. You will be independently monitoring your heart rate and perceived exertion, but there will be someone supervising the exercise sessions. This phase usually involves one-on-one and group classes. The goal of this phase is to increase your exercise tolerance and your independence.

4

This is a phase of gaining more confidence to exercise independently. Phase Four is very important for maintaining your health and well-being, and preventing possible future cardiac events.

What is a Cardiac Event ?

A cardiac event is any incident or injury that may cause damage to your heart muscle. Cardiac events may involve or include a heart attack, angina attack, or a heart surgery.

Why Is Exercise Important After A Cardiac Event?

Exercise is very important for cardiovascular health, even if you have never suffered a cardiac event. Exercise can help lower bad cholesterol levels, reduce blood pressure, reduce stress, and increase exercise tolerance, all of which can help prevent cardiovascular disease.

Studies have shown that cardiac rehabilitation and exercise programs can greatly reduce risk of death and hospitalizations (for cardiac and/or other reasons).

Considering the high prevalence of heart disease in Canada, incorporating exercise into daily life is very important.
